My first exploits into music started at the age of 7 playing recorder at primary school. I then moved on to the piano at the age of 9 and the saxophone from age 11. After reaching grade 5 on piano I stopped lessons to concentrate on the sax and achieved grade 8 by the time I was 17.
My first band experience was with the local music centre, South Downs Youth Concert Band who I played with until I left school. I had a break from playing for about 7 years due to university and jobs that involved a lot of working away. After finding a job that didn't involve travelling I started playing again with a couple of local concert bands and dance bands and finally joined CMCB in 2003 after being invited along by my future wife. I now play tenor sax alongside Karen Armitage (alto sax) and have 3 children aged 14yrs, 5yrs and 3yrs who keep us busy outside of band.

I've been in the band since its formation in 1999 and have worked my way through the clarinet section and now play principal clarinet. I started playing the clarinet at 10 and went on to study professional performance skills in clarinet, saxophone and piano at Music College and then as an MA at Christ Church whilst also teaching the undergraduates, gaining professional diplomas in addition to my degrees.
After a few years I retrained as a Secondary School teacher of Music completing a PGCE course at Roehampton and am now Subject Leader for Music at St Wilfrid's Catholic School in Crawley where I have been now for over 10 years.
CMCB has allowed me to play with long standing friends as well as to forge new ones. I became Secretary for the band several years ago and enjoy being part of the committee in addition to performing with the band and have enjoying watching the band go from strength to strength.

I started playing the flute at the age of 6, having already started learning the piano. I loved playing the flute, and worked towards achieving Grade 8 when I was 16. I started working for a diploma, but with A-levels and other commitments, I ran out of time. At school I was awarded four prizes for music, some of which were academic, and others performance-based. I then went to Durham Universtity where I read psychology, and then down to Devon to study for my PGCE. I came back to West Sussex to teach at a primary school in the Horsham area.
When I was 15 I joined Slinfold Concert Band, and played with them for 8 years. I then joined CMCB where I have played both flute and piccolo, and am currently the principal flautist. Recently, I was invited to join Slinfold Concert Band again where I share the roles of piccoloist and principal flautist.
I met my husband at CMCB and we now have two young children. I am a full-time mother, but teach a few pupils flute and piano.

I started playing the piano when I was 5, and then started flute lessons at age 8. I worked up through the grades and achieved grade 8 flute when I was 15, and grade 8 piano when I was 16. Randomly, I also gained grade 6 in the baritone saxophone, which I played in my school jazz band and thoroughly enjoyed! I was also a member of the South West Surrey Concert Band, for which I was the principal flautist for a couple of years. I was lucky enough to tour with both bands on numerous occasions, the highlight was going to Florida and playing at all the theme parks!
Sadly I stopped playing music when I went to university, and then my career and further studying got in the way but I finally decided to pick up my music again by joining the Concert Band in January 2012. I really enjoy playing with the band and I have recently joined the Committee to try and help out wherever I can. For my day job, I work as an HR Business Partner at a local college which is very hectic and challenging, but I love it.
