The history of the band
The band was formed in June 1999 as part of Crawley’s Millennium celebrations. Each time the town needed a band to play in Crawley, one had to be found from elsewhere, so local musician John Fisher decided to set one up. The band played its inaugural concert at The Hawth theatre, Crawley on 15th January 2000. Since then, the band continues to hold an annual concert in Crawley and performs regularly in Crawley for events such as Crawley Festival and local charity events. In addition, the band plays further afield at a variety of venues in the South East, such as locally in Horsham, along the coast in Eastbourne, and further north in Surrey.
Since its inception, CMCB has toured abroad several times. In 2001 the band visited Crawley’s twin town, Dorsten in Germany. This was followed by participation in the music and cultural festival in Gyula, Hungary to which the band has since returned. In 2004, the band toured the Ukraine taking part in the Independence Celebrations and playing before an audience of 27,000 in the town of Ternopil. In 2008, the band visited Rome, performing at several venues including the British Embassy. In the past couple of years, the band has been on tour more locally, performing at the Heckington Agricultural Show in Lincolnshire.
The band plays an exciting range of music from rock to jazz, classical to military and dance to show music. With a music library of about 300 pieces, there is something for every occasion. The band has also had four works of music specifically written for them - the Crawley Pride of Place fanfare, which opened the band’s inaugural concert, Crawley Diamond, to celebrate Crawley Town’s 60th anniversary celebrations, Tim’s World in memory of one of our clarinet players who tragically lost his life in a car accident and Jubilee Suite to celebrate our 10th anniversary.
