Hannah Johnston - Principal Flautist
I started playing the flute at the age of 6, having already started learning the piano. I loved playing the flute, and worked towards achieving Grade 8 when I was 16. I started working for a diploma, but with A-levels and other commitments, I ran out of time. At school I was awarded four prizes for music, some of which were academic, and others performance-based. I then went to Durham Universtity where I read psychology, and then down to Devon to study for my PGCE. I came back to West Sussex to teach at a primary school in the Horsham area.
When I was 15 I joined Slinfold Concert Band, and played with them for 8 years. I then joined CMCB where I have played both flute and piccolo, and am currently the principal flautist. Recently, I was invited to join Slinfold Concert Band again where I share the roles of piccoloist and principal flautist.
I met my husband at CMCB and we now have two young children. I am a full-time mother, but teach a few pupils flute and piano.

Susie Barrett - 1st Flute

I started playing the piano when I was 5, and then started flute lessons at age 8. I worked up through the grades and achieved grade 8 flute when I was 15, and grade 8 piano when I was 16. Randomly, I also gained grade 6 in the baritone saxophone, which I played in my school jazz band and thoroughly enjoyed! I was also a member of the South West Surrey Concert Band, for which I was the principal flautist for a couple of years. I was lucky enough to tour with both bands on numerous occasions, the highlight was going to Florida and playing at all the theme parks!
Sadly I stopped playing music when I went to university, and then my career and further studying got in the way but I finally decided to pick up my music again by joining the Concert Band in January 2012. I really enjoy playing with the band and I have recently joined the Committee to try and help out wherever I can. For my day job, I work as an HR Business Partner at a local college which is very hectic and challenging, but I love it.

I started playing the flute when I was 7 years old and have played in my school orchestras. When I left school after my A-levels I joined the Crawley Millennium Concert band so that I could keep up my playing and meet new people.
