Harvey hails from a small village in Warwickshire and began his career in music very early on in life, singing in the church choir and winning many competitions as a soloist. When he was eight he began to learn playing the cornet with his local colliery brass band. He soon became proficient on the cornet and trumpet winning many solo competitions in the Midlands and Nationally.
During his early teens he became the principal trumpet with the Warwickshire Youth Orchestra and a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain he also passed an audition for the National Orchestra of Great Britain but decided to further his ambition of joining the Royal Air Force as a musician. During his training in the RAF School of Music he was invited to play with the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain. After graduating Harvey held the posts as principal cornet/trumpet in all the RAF bands he served most notably the world renowned Central Band of the RAF. He has performed on countless broadcasts and CD’s including sessions in Abbey Road. London, and in most of the major concert halls in the UK, he once had to play a rifle in the Royal Festival Hall.
His study in music continued and in 1997 was awarded the Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians for being the most outstanding student bandmaster of his year. The following year he gained his Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music in direction. Harvey has studied conducting with Frank Renton, Guy Woolfenden, Rod Winther and Tim Reynish.
Since retiring from the RAF in 2006 Harvey began to work at the Royal College of Music but now works for the Royal Air Forces Association and is a freelance conductor, performer and brass teacher/clinician.
